![]() ![]() In qualitative research of the supportive and nonsupportive interactions experienced by male family caregivers, the interactive use of genograms and ecomaps (a) facilitated increased understanding of social networks as a context for caregiving, (b) promoted a relational process between researcher and participant, and (c) uncovered findings such as unrealized potential in the participant's social network that may not be revealed with the use of the genogram or ecomap alone, or the noncomparative use of both. Genogram use in social work practice is supported by social work. The culturagram was developed in response to the cultural diversity of families and the need for ethnic-sensitive practice. Now, genograms have been used beyond family dynamics context. Social Work Portal, an online resource for social work professionals, defines an ecomap as a tool used by a social worker to visually represent the significant people, organizations and systems affecting a client’s life. In this blog post, we will discuss the basics of genograms and how they can be used in client counseling. Although development and utilization of genograms and ecomaps is rooted in clinical practice with families, as research tools they provide data that can enhance the researcher's understanding of family member experiences. as adoption or foster placements9 in social service setting. In the field of social work, genograms help professionals understand family dynamics and how it may influence someone’s mental health or social functioning. Genograms are a powerful diagnostic tool that can be used by counselors to understand the client’s family history and how it may be impacting their current problems. A genogram is a graphic portrayal of the composition and structure of one's family and an ecomap is a graphic portrayal of personal and family social relationships. This article argues for the concurrent and comparative use of genograms and ecomaps in family caregiving research. ![]()
